From a hidden creek beneath Sixth Street to the glow of Sammie's and the clean lines of downtown architecture, Manny and Ellie's session explored several different sides of Austin in a single evening.

A Downtown Austin Couples Session with Manny & Ellie
One of the things I enjoy most about photographing couples is watching how differently every relationship moves through the world. Some couples need a little time to settle in. Others seem to arrive already comfortable simply being themselves.
Manny and Ellie had been together for about a year when we met up for their downtown Austin couples session, and from the first few minutes it was obvious they fell into that second category. There was an ease between them that never felt performed. They laughed easily, moved naturally through the evening, and made my job surprisingly simple.
We started beneath Sixth Street at one of those locations that many people pass without ever noticing. Tucked beneath the city is a quiet stretch of water framed by limestone, greenery, and the bridge overhead. It’s the kind of place that feels slightly hidden, especially when compared to the energy of the streets only a short walk away.
Standing there, you’d hardly guess you were in the middle of downtown Austin.
The soft light filtering through the trees created a completely different atmosphere from what most people imagine when they think of city portraits. For a few moments, the noise of traffic and restaurants felt far away. It was just Manny and Ellie moving through the space together, laughing, talking, and occasionally forgetting I was there at all.
From there, we made our way back toward Sixth Street and one of my favorite visual corners of downtown.
Sammie’s has a personality all its own. The deep red exterior, vintage signage, striped awnings, and warm glow from the neon create a backdrop that feels both classic and distinctly Austin. The manager was kind enough to allow us to photograph around the front of the restaurant and within the courtyard area, which opened up even more opportunities to use the space creatively.
What I loved most was how naturally Manny and Ellie fit into the environment. The bold colors and busy surroundings never overwhelmed them. Instead, they brought their own energy to the scene.
There are sessions where I’m constantly guiding movement, suggesting interactions, and helping people settle into the experience. This wasn’t one of those sessions. Manny, in particular, was completely comfortable in front of the camera. He embraced the experience from the start, which allowed the session to unfold naturally. The result was a collection of images that feel relaxed, spontaneous, and true to who they are together.
As evening continued, they changed outfits and we shifted to a completely different side of downtown Austin.
The modern architecture surrounding the federal courthouse provided a striking contrast to the warmth and texture of the earlier locations. Clean lines replaced neon. Stone and glass replaced greenery. The city suddenly felt quieter and more refined.
What makes downtown Austin such a rewarding place to photograph is how quickly it can change character. Within the span of a single evening, we moved from water and trees to vintage storefronts and finally to contemporary architecture. Each location brought something different to the session, but Manny and Ellie remained the constant thread connecting it all.
Sessions like this are one of the reasons I created Date Night Upgrade. The photographs matter, of course, but some of my favorite evenings involve slowing down for a few hours, exploring somewhere together, and creating space for people to simply enjoy being together while I document it.
By the end of the evening, what stood out most wasn’t any particular location. It was how easily Manny and Ellie moved through all of them. Whether we were standing beside the water beneath Sixth Street, walking past the glow of Sammie’s, or sitting among the lines and stone of the courthouse, they brought the same sense of ease with them.
Manny and Ellie made that easy.
